about

For over a decade I lived in an old house in south Oconee County. It was originally a potato crib. There were chicken tracks in the cement floor. The toilet would freeze over in the winter. Buzzards often dried their wings on the limbs of a rotting tulip poplar in the yard. It was cold, rotting, and haunted. I would have this recurring dream about a dusty black hearse idling at the side of the house waiting for me to come out. I usually don’t remember my dreams unless. As soon as I wrote about this one, I stopped dreaming about the hearse. I cried when I had to move out of that place and again when the owners tore it down.

lyrics

Heads in red, skull to skull, boot-strap tendon snap, smell of dried blood.
I’ve got a dead tree rotting inside my backyard. From his wooden arms are perching Satan’s guard. Leaving hair on the pavement is his calling card. Blacktop as a griddle likes it cooked but not charred. Hearse back there beside my back door. Wonder what it’s there for?
Heads in red, skull to skull, boot-strap tendon snap, smell of dried blood.
Sending semaphore, semaphore now Janie, semaphore, semi. Semaphore, semaphore now Janie semaphore, semi.
